Saleh Al Omari has sparked a row after posting a swipe at Cristiano Ronaldo following Portugal's 2-1 win over Croatia in the World Cup round of 32.
Ronaldo scored in the match and helped Portugal reach the last 16, where they are due to face Spain. Al Omari, a former Al Ahli player, shared an image of Ronaldo's celebration and wrote: “Tell him the quarter-finals are against Spain! No problem, they are not used to these stages and do not know how to deal with them.”
The comment spread quickly on social media, with many Al Nassr supporters calling it an unnecessary insult to Portugal's captain. Abdulaziz Al-Marsel, a journalist close to Al Nassr, also hit back and said Al Omari had got his facts wrong.
Al-Marsel pointed out that Portugal reached the semi-finals at the 2006 World Cup before losing to France, and said Al Omari had even misread the knockout rounds.
Ronaldo's goal also took him to another record, as he became the oldest scorer in World Cup knockout history at 41 years and 148 days.
