Argentina chant points to Messi's last World Cup

Argentina players have sparked talk that Lionel Messi's World Cup career is nearing its end after a post-match chant in the dressing room.

Video from the celebrations after Argentina's 3-2 win over Egypt at the 2026 World Cup showed the squad singing “Por la última de Leo”, which translates as “for Leo's last one” or “for Leo's last World Cup”. The chant came as Argentina marked progression to the quarter-finals.

The song also nodded to Argentina's recent World Cup history and their bid to win back-to-back titles after lifting the 2022 tournament by beating France.

Messi, 39, has not officially retired from international football, but the chant was widely read as an indirect acknowledgement that the 2026 tournament may be his final World Cup.
