Argentina will meet Egypt in one of the standout knockout ties of the 2026 World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on 7 July.
The holders reached this stage after a nervous 3-2 extra-time win over Cape Verde, a match that exposed some defensive issues and a heavy reliance on Messi for key moments. Lionel Scaloni’s side still have the quality and experience to handle a deep run, but their pressing and back line have not looked entirely secure.
Egypt made history by reaching the last 16 for the first time. They held Australia 1-1 before winning on penalties, leaning on a compact defence, quick counters and the influence of Salah.
The two sides have met only twice before, with Argentina winning once and the other game ending level. Their last meeting came in 2008, when Argentina won 2-0.
Argentina may be without Facundo Medina, while Egypt also have injury doubts over Karim Hafez, Ahmed Fattouh and Mohamed Abdelmonem.
