Iraq’s head coach: “We want to make our fans proud

Graham Arnold has told Iraq to trust their own level ahead of the meeting with Norway, saying the squad are in place to produce a display that makes supporters proud.

The Australian coach said his long spell in management has given him the experience to use against Norway, and added that Iraq learned during their route through the play-offs how to press opponents. He wants his players to concentrate on their strengths rather than get drawn into the opposition’s game.

Arnold also addressed the threat of Erling Haaland, but stressed that Friday’s match will not be decided by one player alone.

“It's 11 versus 11,” he said, arguing that Iraq must stay compact, keep their structure and compete in the air and on the ground. If they do that, he believes they will have a chance.

He also said Asian football, particularly in the Middle East, has developed quickly since Australia joined the confederation in 2006. Arnold described Iraq’s trip to the United States positively despite reported travel problems, saying the team have good training facilities and are excited about the tournament.
