Barcelona set Champions League record with four teenagers

Barcelona set a Champions League record by naming four teenagers in their starting line-up against Paris Saint-Germain.

Teenagers in the XI

Lamine Yamal, Marc Bernal, Xavi Espart and Pau Cubarsi all started the match. All four were born in 2007, which made Barcelona the first club to field four teenagers from the outset in a Champions League game.

La Masia pathway

The selection reflected Barcelona's recent focus on youth development. Players from La Masia have been given regular chances in the first team, with Yamal already established in attack and Cubarsi in defence.

Bernal and Espart are also among the club's younger prospects, and their inclusion in such a high-level fixture added another step in their European experience. The line-up put Barcelona's next generation in the same team and produced a record that drew attention back to the club's youth system.
