New Zealand head coach: We could have achieved a historic victory

Darren Bazely praised New Zealand’s performance after their 2-2 draw with Iran in the 2026 World Cup group stage, but said the match could have ended with a first World Cup win for his side.

The New Zealand coach said he was “very proud” of his players, pointing to their work rate, the chances they created and the periods when they defended well. He added that the squad left the pitch frustrated after twice going ahead.

Bazely said New Zealand had “two great goals” and the chance to “make history” on the night, but admitted that dropping the lead was painful. Even so, he insisted his team stayed in the game and produced a strong display.

He also singled out Elijah Just’s celebrations after both goals, saying the moments were special for the team, staff, supporters and those watching at home. Looking ahead to games against Egypt and Belgium, Bazely said New Zealand need more consistency over 90 minutes and must cut out defensive mistakes.
