Sebastián Beccacece defended Ecuador's performance after a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening Group E match at the 2026 World Cup.
The Ecuador coach said his side had controlled much of the game and limited Ivory Coast's chances before a late mistake changed the result.
"The result is very bitter for us, because in many parts of the match we played well and did not allow the opponent many chances," Beccacece said after the game. "Unfortunately, at the moment when we needed more concentration, we were punished."
He added that the team had been in control until the closing minutes, but one lapse proved decisive.
Beccacece also praised his players' effort and said there was no lack of fight in the display. Ecuador now have two group matches left and, according to their coach, their hopes of progressing remain in their own hands.
