Bilsa: I haven't contributed anything to Uruguayan football

Marcelo Bielsa said Uruguay were unlucky not to take a point from their 1-0 defeat to Spain, but admitted he had failed to get the best out of the squad and had "not given anything" to the national team.

Bielsa said the match was even and that Uruguay deserved a draw, adding that the team’s performance was not the issue. He pointed to his use of Federico Valverde as a substitute in an attempt to give Uruguay more authority in attack.

The comments came after Uruguay’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup. Spain and Cape Verde advanced from Group H to the round of 16, while Uruguay finished third on two points and went out.

Bielsa was blunt about his own legacy in the job, saying that if people remember him in Uruguay, it will be as someone who left nothing behind. He linked that view to the lack of a positive return from his work with the side.
