CAF restores Africa Cup of Nations to a two-year cycle

CAF has formally reversed its plan to stage the Africa Cup of Nations every four years and will keep the tournament on a two-year cycle.

Decision reversed

According to Fotbali, CAF's executive committee voted unanimously on Thursday, 29 October 2026 to keep the competition's traditional format. The move cancels a December 2025 plan that would have switched the tournament to a four-year cycle from 2028 and filled the gap with a new Africa Nations League.

Patrice Motsepe, CAF's president, had already said at the confederation's strategy conference in Cape Verde that the timetable was under review. He later said the two-year cycle serves the interests of African football, the 54 member associations and African players based at clubs outside the continent.

Next tournaments

The next Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2027. CAF's schedule then shows tournaments in 2028, 2031 and 2033, with no continental national team competition in 2030 because of the World Cup.
