Chelsea have suffered 14 defeats in 27 matches since March, the worst loss record across Europe’s five major leagues.
The numbers behind the slump
According to data from Transfermarkt and Opta, the Stamford Bridge side have lost at a higher rate than any other major club on the continent in that spell. Atlético Madrid are next on 13 defeats in 33 games, while Parma, Osasuna and Athletic Bilbao are all on 12.
The figures point to a run that goes beyond league position. Some of the losses came in heavy setbacks last season, including two defeats to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League knockout round and the FA Cup final loss to Manchester City.
Alonso calls it unacceptable
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso said at his latest press conference that the record is unacceptable and that the club will look to make changes in the winter transfer window to restore stability.
The trend has continued into the current season, which suggests the problem is not confined to one spell or one competition.
