Colombia beat the Republic of Congo 1-0 in their second Group K match at Guadalajara’s World Cup stadium and booked a place in the round of 16.
Daniel Muñoz scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute after Colombia had chased the opener from the start. He also had an early effort ruled out for offside in the sixth minute.
Colombia pushed hard again after the break and saw more chances come and go before Muñoz finally broke through. Luis Díaz then had two goals disallowed in quick succession, first for a foul and then for offside.
Italian referee Maurizio Mariani booked Colombia pair Jhon Lucumí and Jefferson Lerma. Former Esteghlal midfielder Gaël Kakuta was on Congo’s bench but did not feature.
The result leaves Colombia top of Group K on six points after their 3-1 win over Uzbekistan in the opening round. Congo sit third on one point, while Portugal are second on four after beating Uzbekistan 5-0.
The final round of group matches takes place simultaneously on Sunday, 7 July.
