Manchester United would view Antonio Conte as a leading candidate if they decide to part ways with Michael Carrick, according to Goal.
Conte open to Premier League return
The 57-year-old is said to be looking for a route back to top-level European football after leaving Napoli this summer. He has also managed Chelsea and Tottenham, and won the Premier League with Chelsea.
Conte has spoken before about the demands of taking charge at a club with a strong history and several trophies. He said a coach at that kind of club carries a heavy responsibility and must try to bring the side back towards success if results have slipped.
Carrick still has support inside the club
Carrick is under growing pressure after Manchester United's poor start to the current Premier League season. The draw against 10-man Tottenham at Old Trafford added to fan frustration, but the club have not reached a crisis point and have given him more time to improve results.
He also retains backing from the dressing room.
Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe have also been mentioned as possible candidates. Nagelsmann has long been of interest to INEOS.
