Copa América set to return to four-year cycle

Four-year rhythm restored

Copa América will return to its traditional four-year cycle, ending the compressed run of recent editions. South American football authorities have decided to restore the regular gap between tournaments, bringing the competition back in line with other major international events.

Five tournaments in nine years

The competition was staged in 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2024, meaning five editions took place in just nine years. That unusual stretch was driven by changes to the international calendar and special decisions to add extra tournaments in exceptional circumstances.

The tighter schedule had pushed the event away from its historical pattern, with some editions landing unusually close together.

Longer gaps, bigger build-up

A return to a four-year interval gives national teams more time to prepare and plan for each tournament. It also raises the value of each edition, with a longer wait between titles and more scope for squads to develop over the cycle.
