Croatia backed to beat Panama after opening defeats

Croatia head into their World Cup 2026 Group L match with Panama needing a response after a 4-2 defeat by England, and they are expected to have enough quality to take the points.

Panama also lost their opener, going down 1-0 to Ghana after conceding in stoppage time, but Thomas Christiansen's side showed plenty of energy and created several chances. Aníbal Godoy, Ismael Díaz and quick work down the flanks could still trouble Croatia.

Even so, Croatia look stronger on paper. Luka Modrić, Mateo Kovačić and Mario Pašalić give Zlatko Dalić control in midfield, while Petar Musa, Ante Budimir and Andrej Kramarić offer finishing options if they can stretch Panama's defence.

Panama are likely to stay compact, sit deep and look for counters rather than push high. That approach may keep them in the game for spells, but Croatia's experience and depth should tell if they settle into their rhythm after the break.

Panama have scored 27 goals and conceded 11 in their last 15 matches. Croatia have scored 30 in their last 11, and found the net in nine of those games.
