Marc Cucurella has said he understands the criticism aimed at Spain, but insists results matter more than style in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.
Spain, the European champions, go into Thursday’s last-16 tie against Austria in Los Angeles unbeaten and top of Group H, but have not yet produced their most fluent football.
Cucurella spoke before training at LA Galaxy’s base and said he would rather see Spain progress without playing beautifully than leave the tournament after a flashy performance. He also said the team are working through the issues that affected their rhythm in the group stage.
Louis de la Fuente used three different players alongside Rodri and Pedri across Spain’s three group matches, underlining the search for balance in midfield.
Baena, speaking separately, said Spain must speed up their passing in the knockout rounds. Pau Cubarsi also backed Lamine Yamal, saying the winger is in strong mental and physical condition ahead of another big match.
