Zlatko Dalic has told Croatia they must play like contenders when they meet Panama in the second round of Group L at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday morning.
Both sides need a win after losing their opening matches, with the result likely to shape their hopes of reaching the knockout stage. Dalic said Croatia must improve on their last outing, especially at the back, and demanded more responsibility and concentration from his players.
"We have to be better than in the last game. We must repair and correct the mistakes we made, especially in defence," he said in his pre-match press conference.
Dalic, who has led Croatia since 2017, added that he expects his team to handle the occasion with the mindset of a side chasing qualification. "We are contenders and we must behave like contenders. We expect a result," he said.
Croatia and Panama both remain without a point, while England top Group L on three points, level with Ghana. Croatia would be eliminated if they lose to Panama and Ghana avoid defeat against England.
Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic said Croatia can lean on their experience in big matches as they look to keep their campaign alive.
