Luis de la Fuente says Spain are ready for the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup and that from here on only wins count.
Ahead of the round of 16 against Austria, the Spain coach said his squad has found a good rhythm and is performing well, but there is no margin for error in the knockout rounds. He also said Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal have grown in understanding through more time together, with that cohesion reflected across the squad.
De la Fuente dismissed Alejandro Grimaldo’s comments about opportunities for selection as part of normal competition for places, insisting Spain’s players put the team first. He also named France among the main contenders for the title and said several major teams have already shown that success depends on what happens on the day.
On injuries, De la Fuente gave positive news on Yeremi Pino, describing his return as close to a miracle, and said he has trained without problems. Nico Williams will miss the Austria match, though he may be available for the next game. De la Fuente also praised Rodri, Pedri, Fabián Ruiz and Martín Zubimendi, and said Spain must use quick passing, sharp decisions and space in tight areas to beat Austria.
