Sergiño Dest has talked up the United States’ chances at the World Cup, saying the hosts can surprise opponents despite being underestimated.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, Dest said he is looking forward to the USA’s opening group game in Los Angeles. He pointed to a section that includes Paraguay, Australia and Turkey, and said the group looks one of the toughest in the tournament based on FIFA rankings.
Dest said the USA want to prove their value as hosts and would not be surprised if other teams look past them. He added that being underestimated could work in their favour.
The former Ajax, Barcelona and Milan defender said the United States do not have the best team in the world, but insisted that commitment and teamwork can take them a long way. He said playing at home gives the squad extra motivation and reflects an American mindset of believing anything is possible.
