The 2030 World Cup will be held with 64 teams

CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez has said the 2030 World Cup will feature 64 teams, but FIFA has not announced an official decision.

Domínguez posted on social media that the centenary tournament should be marked with a larger field. The 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the first matches staged in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to commemorate the competition’s 100th anniversary.

He wrote that the next World Cup would be held “in our home” and described 2030 as a major chance to celebrate the tournament with 64 teams.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had already said after the 2026 World Cup that expansion could be reviewed again once that tournament is over. For now, though, there is no formal confirmation from FIFA that the 2030 edition will move beyond the current 48-team format.
