The referee in Nacional's 3-0 win over Rentistas used an electronic device instead of traditional yellow and red cards in the Uruguay Cup.
How the system works
The handset-style device has two buttons, one for a yellow card and one for a red. The referee presses the relevant button to show the card on screen and record the punishment at the same time.
It can also log substitutions, penalties and other match events. The information is then sent automatically to COMET, the Uruguayan Football Association's competition management system.
Trial phase and limits
Eduardo Varela handled the device in the match, which Nacional won 3-0.
The technology is still being tested and has problems. One issue is that the card colours are hard to see from a distance or in poor light, which had already stopped it being used fully in another match.
It is not yet clear when the tool will be used more widely in official competitions.
