Enzo Fernández: No player can take Messi's place

Enzo Fernández has said his €145 million move from Chelsea to Manchester City should not distract him from football, while praising his partnership with Erling Haaland and reflecting on Lionel Messi’s impact on his career.

Fee and club role

The 25-year-old spoke to Argentine newspaper La Nación about several parts of his career. He said the transfer fee should not become the focus, and argued that a player’s job is to keep improving and repay the club’s trust on the pitch.

Fernández also spoke positively about working with Enzo Maresca and described his relationship with Haaland as very good. He said their understanding on the pitch is growing day by day.

Messi’s example

The most emotional part of the interview centred on Messi. Fernández said football will not see another player like him, and said he cried after the Argentina captain retired.

He added that the main lesson he learned from playing alongside Messi was humility and commitment to the team. In his view, Messi remained fully devoted to the national side despite everything he achieved.

Fernández finished by saying leadership in Argentina should now be shared among the experienced players after Messi and Nicolás Otamendi stepped away, while Lionel Scaloni still has a vital role in keeping the squad together.
