Italy made history against Turkey as Sebastiano and Francesco Pio Esposito started together in Roberto Mancini’s side. The pair lined up in attack in a 4-3-3, with Pio up front and Sebastiano alongside him.
A record not seen since 1915
The last time two brothers started a match for Italy was on 31 January 1915, when Aldo and Luigi Chinoni were both in the XI against Switzerland. Both scored in a 3-1 win, with Aldo netting twice.
Sebastiano, 24, made his senior international debut in the game. Pio, 21, already had 10 caps and five goals for Italy before the match.
Fourth brother pair to feature
The Espositos became the fourth brother pairing to appear for Italy’s senior side. Giuseppe and Felice Milano, Aldo and Luigi Chinoni, and Filippo and Simone Inzaghi had all done it before.
The last of those came in 2000, when Filippo and Simone Inzaghi both featured against England, although they did not start together.
