The Football Association has confirmed it will introduce a new trial rule for goalkeeper injuries across all levels of English football from the 2026/27 season.
What the rule changes
If play stops because of a goalkeeper injury, a coach must immediately name one outfield player to leave the pitch. That player cannot return until at least one minute after play restarts.
The trial has been backed by the FA, the Premier League, the English Football League, the Women’s Super League, the National League and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited organisation, with approval from the International Football Association Board.
Why it is being introduced
The rule is designed to reduce delays and keep the tempo of matches higher. It also aims to prevent teams from using goalkeeper treatment breaks tactically to slow pressure, waste time or pass on extra coaching instructions.
