Uruguay’s September friendlies will mark Diego Forlan’s first matches in charge of the senior team, and the former forward has already left the door open for a Luis Suarez return.
September schedule
Uruguay are due to face Japan on 24 September before meeting South Korea on 28 September.
Forlan was appointed interim head coach after Marcelo Bielsa’s departure and Uruguay’s failure at the 2026 World Cup. The 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner now faces the task of starting a new phase while leaning on experienced players where needed.
Suarez back in frame
Suarez has not played for Uruguay since 2024, after deciding to step away from international football following the Copa America. But Forlan has spoken positively about the 39-year-old Inter Miami striker and said his experience, goals and consistency could make him an option again if he is ready.
Suarez remains Uruguay’s record goalscorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances. The South Korea fixture could carry extra meaning for him: he scored twice against them at the 2010 World Cup, and a return in Korea would come 16 years on from that performance.
