Hajsafi can become Iran’s most capped player this month

Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi could become the country’s most capped men’s player during the upcoming FIFA international window.

Hajsafi has been named in Amir Ghalenoei’s first squad since the World Cup, with friendlies against Uzbekistan and Russia on the schedule. He finished the tournament on 148 caps, level with Ali Daei in second place on Iran’s all-time list, while Javad Nekounam leads on 149, according to FIFA-recognised match records.

If Hajsafi plays against Uzbekistan in Fergana on 2 October, he would move to 149 caps and match Nekounam. A appearance against Russia in Kazan five days later would take him to 150 and the outright record.

Iran also have a third match in this window, with the opponent still to be confirmed. That gives Hajsafi another route to the milestone, even if he only comes off the bench in two of the three fixtures.

Hajsafi made his senior international debut on 23 May 2008 against Zambia, setting up two goals in Iran’s 3-2 win. More than 18 years later, he is on the brink of another landmark in national-team history.
