Thierry Henry: Ronaldo must accept that his situation has changed

Thierry Henry has said Cristiano Ronaldo still ranks among the greatest players in football history, but must adapt to the game’s changing demands after his subdued display against Colombia.

Henry pointed to Ronaldo’s double against Uzbekistan and the forward’s shouted “I’m back” celebration, but said football quickly asks players to prove themselves again. He said Ronaldo had a 6.7 rating in the first half against Colombia, had not scored and had not made the same impact in the penalty area.

“Three days ago Cristiano shouted ‘I’m back’ after scoring twice against Uzbekistan. But tonight football is asking him to prove it again,” Henry said. “The biggest players are not praised for what they did three days earlier; they have to show their quality in every match.”

The former Arsenal striker added that five or ten years ago Ronaldo would likely have finished chances he now misses. He said defenders react faster, the offside line gives him less room and, in World Cup football, chances are limited.

Henry still backed Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal, citing his experience, character and leadership, but said success at the tournament would require a more dangerous presence in the box.
