Zlatan Ibrahimović: Messi is above Pelé and Maradona

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has said Lionel Messi is now above both Pele and Diego Maradona in the all-time debate.

Speaking to Fox News, the former Sweden striker pointed to Messi’s World Cup scoring record, his title win, his impact across different generations and the fact he is still scoring at 39.

He said there was little left to argue after Messi became the top scorer in World Cup history, won the tournament and continued delivering at the age of 39. Ibrahimovic added that Messi’s body of work, long career and trophy haul separate him from Pele, Maradona, Johan Cruyff and any other name in the discussion.

He also backed Messi’s recent form, saying he was pleased to see the Argentina captain score five goals in two games. Ibrahimovic noted that he had not scored in two World Cups himself, and wished Messi well on his birthday.

Ibrahimovic finished by saying Argentina may be analysed for their tactics and control, but the constant focus for supporters remains Messi.
