Infantino backs review of FIFA governance structures

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has told the organisation’s 211 member associations he is ready to examine reforms to FIFA’s management structure and decision-making process.

According to The Athletic, Infantino wants an independent external assessment of the current system used to oversee FIFA’s major strategic projects. He plans to raise the idea with FIFA Council members ahead of the council meeting on 15 October.

Infantino has also proposed a more direct, structured consultation process with confederations, member associations and other stakeholders on ways to strengthen decision-making at FIFA.

In his letter, he said those talks could include earlier involvement for different bodies in the decision-making process, a clearer separation of powers between the president, the president’s office, the FIFA Council and the Congress, and practical steps to improve transparency, stakeholder involvement and accountability in delivering large strategic projects.

Infantino added that FIFA’s independence and democratic processes are not up for negotiation.
