FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended a proposed commercial model for the governing body, saying it is designed to strengthen football finances and would leave World Cup management under FIFA control.
What the proposal says
Infantino described FIFA Forward Enterprises, or FFE, as a proposal rather than a requirement. He said it is part of a consultation process and would only move forward if approved by a majority of FIFA's 211 member associations and the FIFA Council.
Under the plan, FFE would become a FIFA-owned and -controlled subsidiary that brings together commercial operations and events. It would handle marketing, sponsorship, broadcasting, licensing and new projects linked to FIFA competitions.
Money for member associations
Infantino said the model could increase the amount paid to each member association in the next Forward cycle from $8 million to $20 million. He added that associations could access a further $20 million through FIFA's Fast Forward programme, taking the possible total to $40 million.
He said the extra revenue would support better pitches, stronger national teams and more opportunities for young players. Infantino also argued that FIFA remains responsible to fans and would continue to run its major tournaments without outside interference.
