Betis's dream season in La Liga with Isco

Isco scored twice and was named man of the match as Real Betis beat Osasuna 5-2 in La Liga and climbed to third place.

Isco’s return drives Betis on

The Betis captain scored from the penalty spot in the 10th minute and again in the 67th, taking his side to 19 points after eight league games. That leaves Betis level with Atletico Madrid and one point above Real Madrid.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have started the season with six wins, one draw and one defeat, and the result at La Cartuja kept them five points behind leaders Barcelona. Pellegrini said after the match that Isco has “exceptional quality” and is “a true leader”, both in his play and in the energy he brings to the team.

Isco said he is satisfied with his physical progress and pointed to the need for better control in decisive moments. Betis let a 3-0 lead narrow to 3-2, but he still helped see the result through.

Pellegrini’s system suits him

Pellegrini’s possession-based approach, with space creation and collective play, has suited Isco’s passing, movement in the half-spaces and goal threat. The former Spain international has become central to Betis’ midfield as he builds back towards full sharpness after two major injuries.

Betis now face a run of important fixtures in La Liga and the Champions League return, with the squad aiming to keep pushing towards the European places.
