Jorge Jesus is set to be named Portugal head coach this week, with the Portuguese federation having reached agreement with the 71-year-old only hours after Roberto Martinez’s exit was confirmed.
Jesus is expected to sign a four-year contract, giving him the chance to lead Portugal at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. His first major task will be defending the Nations League title Portugal won in 2025. Portugal have been drawn with Wales, Norway and Denmark in the group stage.
The appointment will be Jesus’s first role in international football. He began coaching in 1989 with Amora and has spent the past four years outside Portugal, first at Fenerbahce and then in Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal and Al Nassr.
Jesus won the Saudi league with both clubs and coached Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr. He also had a successful spell at Flamengo, where he won the Brazilian Serie A, Copa Libertadores, South American Super Cup and Brazilian Super Cup between 2019 and 2020.
In Portugal, Jesus built his reputation with Braga and Benfica. He won the Intertoto Cup with Braga, then claimed three league titles across two spells at Benfica, before a controversial move to Sporting Lisbon in 2015 brought further domestic silverware.
