Harry Kane is one appearance away from matching Peter Shilton’s England caps record, with the captain set to face Czech Republic at Wembley in the Nations League.
Kane closes in on Shilton mark
Kane would move level with Shilton on 125 England caps if he plays, adding another entry to a career that began with a goal 79 seconds into his debut against Lithuania in March 2015. The 33-year-old has since become England’s all-time leading scorer, with 89 goals in 124 appearances.
His record in major tournaments is strong too. Kane has scored 21 goals in 36 games across six major finals, leaving him well clear of Gary Lineker on that list.
Murphy backs Kane’s place in the debate
Danny Murphy, the former England midfielder, said Kane deserves full respect in any discussion about England’s greatest players.
Murphy said Bobby Moore and Sir Bobby Charlton would always be part of those conversations, while Wayne Rooney might be the most complete player England have produced. He added that nobody can question Kane’s quality, numbers or longevity, describing the record as the work of a great England player.
