World’s oldest footballer signs contract extension

Kazuyoshi Miura has signed a new one-year contract with Fukushima United, keeping the veteran forward at the club until June 2024.

The Japanese striker remains a record-holder with Guinness World Records after appearing in a competitive match aged 59 years, three months and 12 days.

Miura’s career began in the early 1980s and has stretched across more than four decades. He also played a key role in Japan’s qualification for the 1998 World Cup, scoring 15 goals in the campaign.

Despite that contribution, Takeshi Okada left him out of the squad for the finals in France, denying him a place at the tournament.
