The reason for the Bayern Munich head coach's hospitalization

Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday, 23 October after a sudden deterioration in his condition at Bayern Munich’s training base.

Illness hit him through the week

The Bayern head coach had been dealing with a severe viral infection in recent days, and it had already affected his movement. He also sat through much of Bayern’s 6-1 win over Leipzig because he was unwell, while hip problems made the situation harder.

Kompany missed the first two days of training earlier in the week and stayed at home, but returned to the touchline for the Champions League draw with Arsenal. After that match, he admitted he had not paid enough attention to his own condition and said his body had forced him to stop and rest.

Bayern move to protect their coach

Assistant coach Aaron Danks said before the Arsenal match that rest and time to recover were the main concerns. Sporting director Max Eberl has since said Kompany will receive all necessary medical care and as much time as he needs.

Bayern’s coaching staff will take over training and match duties until further notice. Bayern face Freiburg on Sunday, with the coach’s full recovery the club’s immediate concern.
