Lukaku calls Napoli spell the worst year of his life

Romelu Lukaku has described his time at Napoli as the worst year of his life after completing a move to Fenerbahçe.

Lukaku rejects fitness doubts

The 33-year-old answered criticism over his physical condition after Fenerbahçe’s Champions League play-off against Lyon. He said claims that he was not ready were “completely wrong” and added that people in Italy had tried to turn opinion against him.

Lukaku made only 102 minutes of appearances in all competitions for Napoli last season. A pre-season injury against Olympiakos, a long recovery and a falling-out with Antonio Conte left him on the margins, while personal problems including the death of his father added to a difficult period.

Why he left Napoli

Speaking about his exit, Lukaku said he had heard things and decisions were made, so it was better for him to move on. He did not go into detail about the split.

He said Fenerbahçe offers a fresh start and a demanding environment. Lukaku added that he needs motivation and wants to keep playing at the highest level while competing for trophies.
