Manchester City could face record English football punishment

Manchester City could face one of the heaviest punishments in English football history, with reports suggesting a points deduction severe enough to send them down to the Championship.

What the reported sanctions could be

According to Mail Sport, sources familiar with the case believe one possible outcome is a large points deduction alongside a heavy financial penalty. The report says further sanctions are also under discussion to stop City returning quickly to the Premier League.

The Premier League is understood to want to set out its position before the appeal process is complete, although the timing of any decision is still unclear.

The case and the appeal

The case centres on alleged financial breaches between 2009 and 2018. An independent commission found City guilty on 114 of 115 charges brought by the Premier League, all linked to the club’s accounts and financial information. City have denied wrongdoing and say they have strong evidence in their defence.

The club lodged its appeal on 1 October 2026. Any final sanction now depends on that process and on coordination with the Football League if relegation or extra penalties are imposed.
