Manchester United have dropped into the relegation zone for the first time since November 1986 after Nottingham Forest beat Manchester City 3-1.
Pressure on Carrick grows
The result also handed City a third straight league defeat. It left United in a crisis the club has not faced for 40 years, with Michael Carrick under heavy pressure after the worst start of any Premier League United side.
United could slide to the bottom of the table before they play on Sunday. That would happen if Sunderland beat Chelsea and Crystal Palace take at least a point against Liverpool at Selhurst Park.
United have not won in the league since the 5-2 home victory over Ipswich Town, the newly promoted side, on 30 August.
A brief lift in Europe
Carrick, 45, did get some relief on Tuesday when United came from behind to beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League. But his long-term future remains uncertain, and the poor performance against Unai Emery's Aston Villa may yet push the club's hierarchy towards a managerial change.
