Brazil booked their place in the World Cup last 16 with a 2-1 win over Japan at Houston Stadium in Texas, sealed by Gabriel Martinelli’s stoppage-time finish.
Japan took the lead in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano robbed possession, drove forward and placed a shot into the corner beyond Alisson Becker. Brazil went in at half-time behind after struggling to turn their early pressure into clear chances.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side improved after the break. Casemiro levelled in the 56th minute with a firm header from a Gabriel cross, after Bruno Guimarães had seen a header saved and Casemiro had another effort kept out almost straight away.
Vinícius Júnior then hit the post as Brazil pushed for a winner. It looked set for extra tension until Bruno Guimarães slipped a precise pass through for Martinelli, who scored in the 90+6 minute to settle the tie.
Brazil will face either Côte d’Ivoire or Norway in New York/New Jersey in the next round.
