Roberto Martinez has backed Cristiano Ronaldo and said Portugal have come through their opening draw against DR Congo in a stronger state ahead of facing Uzbekistan at the World Cup 2026.
Speaking before the group-stage match, Martinez said the dressing room has stayed calm and focused after the reaction to the first game. He said the squad reviewed their performance closely, held themselves to a high standard and responded well to a difficult spell.
Martinez also praised Ronaldo, calling the captain a true leader and a role model for the squad in his sixth World Cup. He said he has not yet shared his final decision on the starting line-up with the players before making it public.
The Portugal coach added that Uzbekistan, now managed by Fabio Cannavaro, have a strong defensive structure and good tactical discipline. He said Portugal respect the opposition and do not expect an easy match.
Martinez finished by saying the disappointment of the first game has become motivation for the next one, and that Portugal should look sharper and more prepared against Uzbekistan.
