Michael Owen backs Chelsea to challenge Arsenal for title

Michael Owen has named Chelsea as a serious challenger to Arsenal’s Premier League title defence, while saying Mikel Arteta’s side still set the standard.

Arsenal still lead the field

Arsenal won their first Premier League title in 22 years last season and have already strengthened their midfield with the signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United.

Owen told Metro that the Gunners are the team to beat, but warned that the title race could be tighter than expected. He pointed out that Arsenal did not finish on more than 90 points last season, leaving room for rivals to close the gap if they slip.

Chelsea’s schedule could help

Owen said Chelsea’s absence from European competition is an important factor and could give them an edge over the course of the season. He also suggested the club may now have a coach better placed to manage the dressing room and get consistent performances from the squad.

He added that Chelsea’s heavy spending in recent transfer windows may start to pay off if the team can play with more structure and stability.
