Vincenzo Montella: We want to make the Turkish nation proud

Vincenzo Montella has told Turkey’s players to stay calm ahead of their World Cup opener against Australia in Vancouver.

The 51-year-old said his squad are an emotional group, but insisted they can handle the pressure and represent their country well. He added that the first match in a group is always crucial, even if it does not decide everything.

Montella also said the current generation should not feel responsible for Turkey’s 24-year absence from the tournament. Instead, he wants them to embrace the occasion, play with freedom and focus on their own strengths.

“There are very high expectations and this game matters a lot for our players,” he said. “I want them to go on the pitch and play based on their strengths and abilities.”

Turkey begin their campaign against Australia in Vancouver, with Montella describing the opener as a key battle that could shape the rest of their run.
