Neymar and the possibility of retiring from the Brazilian national team

Brazil’s World Cup campaign ended with a 2-1 defeat to Norway, and the result may also have closed the door on Neymar’s international career.

Neymar came on for the final half-hour and scored a late penalty, but it was not enough to prevent elimination in the round of 16. Erling Haaland’s performance helped Norway seal one of Brazil’s biggest recent tournament setbacks.

After the final whistle, Neymar was in tears and had to be comforted by teammates, including Raphinha. The reaction has fuelled talk in Brazil that this may have been his last appearance for the national team at a World Cup.

The forward did not enter the tournament fully fit after recent injury and fitness issues. He started Brazil’s opening match against Scotland but played a reduced role after that, before being used only late on against Norway.

Brazil, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, struggled for control for long spells, particularly in midfield and in dealing with Norway’s attacks. Neymar’s late goal briefly raised hopes of a comeback, but the team could not turn the game around.

He has not made a formal announcement on his future, but the mood around the defeat suggests a decision on his Brazil career may follow soon.
