Algeria began their 2026 World Cup Group J campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Argentina, but Vladimir Petković insisted the result has not ended their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Petković said his side faced one of the world’s best teams and accepted Argentina’s superiority, while defending his players’ display after they battled to the end. He also pointed to Lionel Messi’s quality, saying small mistakes are punished at this level and Argentina made the most of their chances.
The Algeria coach stressed that two matches remain and said qualification is still in the team’s hands. He added that the performance against Argentina must be analysed before the next game.
Algeria now turn to their meeting with Jordan, which Petković described as a final for his side. He said a strong response is needed if they are to keep their qualification hopes alive.
