Poro’s rise continues with another World Cup goal

Pedro Poro’s second goal of the World Cup came in the win over France, another reward for the confidence and form he has rediscovered with Spain.

The move began deep in Spain’s defence, where Poro stepped inside like a midfielder before pushing forward into the French half. He held his position, picked out Olmo and then finished the one-two by beating Mike Maignan.

It was the latest step in a tournament that has turned Poro from bench option to regular starter. He was left out for the opening game against Cape Verde, made his chance count against Saudi Arabia and has since become a fixed part of Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Poro had already scored a header against Austria and dedicated that goal to his children. Against France, he again celebrated with a smile and a raised fist before coming off in the 84th minute, spent after dealing with Barcola and Doué down his flank.

He left the pitch in Dallas to strong applause after another assured display at right-back.
