Portugal’s special tribute to Diogo Jota at the World Cup

Portugal will pay tribute to Diogo Jota at the 2026 World Cup by wearing special armbands in every match.

The symbolic gift was presented to the squad before the tournament during a motivational meeting with prime minister Luís Montenegro. Vitinha confirmed the players accepted it with strong emotion and agreed together to wear the armbands throughout the competition.

The tribute is aimed at preserving Jota's footballing legacy. He made 49 senior appearances for Portugal and scored 14 goals.

Jota died last year in a car crash in Spain, an event that shocked Portuguese football and left a deep mark on his team-mates.

Portugal open their campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the squad hoping to honour their former team-mate on the game’s biggest stage.
