Real Madrid are close to completing a surprise move for Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, according to reports from Spain and elsewhere.
The clubs are said to have agreed the main details of the transfer, while Cucurella has also accepted Madrid’s offer. The Spain international is expected to link up with Real after the World Cup.
Madrid have spent recent weeks looking to strengthen the left side of their defence. Several options were considered, but Cucurella moved to the top of the list because of his experience, technical level and versatility.
Cucurella, who came through Barcelona’s academy, has built a reputation in recent seasons as one of Europe’s more established full-backs. His background makes the move especially notable, given previous talk of a possible return to Barcelona.
Reports close to the deal place the fee at about €40 million. Cucurella turns 28 next month and would bring Premier League and top-level European experience to Madrid if the transfer is finalised.
