Barcelona could hand Rodri his first start when they face Valencia tonight, with Hansi Flick considering more changes before next Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Feyenoord.
Flick set for more rotation
Flick had already warned that Barcelona would use more rotation this season, helped by a bigger summer investment and a deeper squad. He made three changes in each of the first three matches, so more alterations at Mestalla would fit that pattern.
The coach also tested two different defensive line-ups in training yesterday. One group included Cancelo, Kounde, Gerard Martin and Espart; the other featured Eric Garcia, Cubarsi, Christensen and Balde.
Midfield and attack remain open
The biggest midfield question is Rodri, who has not started a match yet and, according to the source, is still short of full fitness after joining the squad later than the others. Mark Bernal has been the regular holding midfielder so far, while Fermin Lopez is in line to return after being left out against Athletic Bilbao.
Lamine Yamal missed Barcelona’s final training session before the Valencia game, although he was still named in the squad. Flick said a late decision would be made on whether he is ready to start.
Raphinha remains a fixed starter, and Flick said he is the first-choice option at number nine. He also said Gabriel Jesus could get minutes, praising the former Arsenal forward after just three training sessions.
