Cristian Romero has left Tottenham for Atlético Madrid in a deal worth €40 million, with Spurs set to receive 15% of any future sale.
Move confirmed
The 28-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with Diego Simeone’s side after attracting interest from Atlético, Inter and Barcelona during the summer window. Tottenham had him under contract until 2029.
Romero joined Spurs in 2021 and made 156 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals and setting up seven more. He also won the Europa League with Tottenham in the 2024-25 season.
Farewell to Spurs
Romero marked the move with an open letter to Tottenham supporters, thanking them for their backing and saying the club had been more than a team to him over the past five seasons.
He said he had wanted to leave his name in Tottenham’s history and praised the people around the club, from coaches and team-mates to the staff behind the scenes. He added that he would always carry a part of Tottenham with him.
