Coventry City ended a four-match losing run and claimed their first points and first goal of the season with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday.
Rushworth’s assist makes history
The decisive moment came in the 55th minute, when Carl Rushworth launched a long ball from inside his own half towards the left. Jay Dasilva ran in behind Nottingham Forest’s back line and finished neatly to score the only goal of the game.
According to Opta, Rushworth became only the second goalkeeper in Premier League history to provide the assist for his team’s first league goal of a season. The only previous example was Peter Schmeichel, who set up Mark Hughes for Manchester United in the 1992/93 campaign.
The result was Coventry’s first Premier League win in 25 years and lifted Frank Lampard’s side after a difficult start.
Rushworth joined Coventry permanently from Brighton this summer after a loan spell that helped them win promotion. The 25-year-old made 46 Championship appearances last season, kept 17 clean sheets and won the division’s Golden Glove. Coventry paid £22.5 million for him, making him their record signing.
