Australia were knocked out of the World Cup after a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Egypt, with Tony Popovic’s late goalkeeper change proving costly.
Popovic replaced Patrick Beach in the 119th minute and sent on captain Mat Ryan purely for the shootout, despite Beach having produced several key saves across 120 minutes in a match that finished 1-1.
Ryan failed to stop any of Egypt’s four penalties. Australia missed the chance to progress, and the move underlined a trend that Opta data has tracked at major tournaments: late substitutions made only for penalties usually do not work.
That pattern has also been seen with outfield players. Recent examples mentioned in the source included Gustavo Alfaro’s late call on Fabián Balbuena for Paraguay, plus Pablo Sarabia, Badr Banoun, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Rodri and Simone Zaza, who all missed after being introduced late for spot-kicks.
For Australia, the risk did not pay off. Beach was removed after an impressive performance, Ryan could not make a save, and one of the tournament’s most striking tactical gambles ended in elimination.
